Misty Mountain is proud to introduce our newest furniture line, The Rustic Heritage line. Our combined years of experience in craftsmanship and design have gone into these pieces to bring you some of the most exquisite rustic elegant furniture available today.
Every piece is individually crafted using hand selected reclaimed lumber. This rescued historical material is painstakingly gathered from regional barns, out buildings, commercial buildings and grain elevators. This lumber dates from turn-of-the-century “big tree years” where timber was abundant and big. Logs were dragged out of the forest by huge teams of horses and sent rushing down rivers to the mill. Most of the material used in these pieces is old growth Douglas Fir or Western Larch. The density and tight grain of this wood is unmatched today. The circular saw marks from the old mill, nail and bolt holes and the unique patina that only comes after 100 years of aging make every piece entirely unique. We take great care when sanding this material to achieve a smooth, luxurious texture without loosing the original characteristics of the aged wood.
We have selected only the finest hardware to compliment these pieces. Every solid maple, dovetailed drawer has top of the line concealed glides. There are European hinges for all our cabinet doors and unique rock knobs to ad yet another unique rustic element. And of course, each piece is finished with several hand-sanded coats of our durable, low gloss acrylic finish.
We feel very privileged to have the opportunity to present you with these new designs and to be working with these fine materials, steeped in history. We hope you’ll enjoy our new Rustic Heritage Line as much as we do.
Old World Hickory
Misty Mountain Furniture is very pleased to have the opportunity to offer our customers genuine Amish made hickory furniture. Almost all of our Old World Hickory line is made in small Amish shops in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. There are more then 10, long standing, family owned, Amish shops making the hickory furniture we offer, each specializing in certain types of hickory furniture. The Amish craftsmen have developed techniques for manufacturing hickory furniture without the use of electricity, which is not allowed in Amish communities. A limited number of diesel or line shaft driven power tools are involved, but the majority of the workmanship is done the Old World way, by hand. All hickory furniture is finished with a very durable clear coat.
Amish communities are deeply family oriented, embracing a strong work ethic and adhering to high standards of performance and industry. This is reflected in the quality of all the Old World Hickory products we offer.
Hickory
In the early 1800’s pioneers crossing the Appalachian Mountains began to harvest and make use of the hickory saplings, a small diameter tree that grew throughout the Midwest. Hickory saplings grow straight and tall in groups of twenty to thirty. The diameter rarely exceeds two to three inches yet the trees can be twenty to thirty years old making the material very dense, flexible and perfected suited for use in making furniture. Stronger then oak, it has been the wood of choice for Appalachian furniture for centuries. Appalachian style Hickory furniture is an enduring American furniture style that lasts a lifetime and is prized by collectors.
Rocky Mountain Maple
As great admirers of Appalachian style hickory furniture we at Misty Mountain furniture have taken to the woods to find a suitable material that grows here in Northern Idaho so that we can create our own rustic designs without importing material from across the country. What we found in great abundance is Rocky Mountain maple. Similar to hickory, Rocky Mountain maple grows in groups in a wide variety of terrain, rarely exceeds four inches in diameter, is extremely dense, strong and flexible. Some Native American tribes favored the straight stems of Rocky Mountain maple for arrow shafts, and the pliable wood for snowshoe frames. Now, Misty Mountain furniture is proud to offer a variety of high quality, unique pieces featuring Rocky Mountain Maple and will continue to expand our line using this excellent material.
