Our Green Facts:
Materials:  Renewable and sustainable resources, small diameter lumber that is generally considered a forest by-product, reclaimed lumber from local and regional structures, local/regional species, short supply chain, local mills, local labor, straw board plywood milled in Idaho, domestic birch plywood.

Shop, Showroom and Property: Energy efficient lighting (soon to be even more efficient following recent meeting with Avista), Passive solar design, energy wind credits, heating efficient, straw board paneling, low water flush toilets and electric hand dryers. Shop is attached to store front which eliminates shipping from supplier to seller. Also, under consideration, are solar panels for shop and showroom lights.  We recycle glass,  aluminum, plastic, paper, magazines, cardboard, wood pallets, sawdust and wood scraps. We “reclaimed” the old “worn out” building and expanded it into an attractive business center in 2000. Many materials from the demo of portion of the old building were reused in the new construction.  We are involved with the DEQ, and making good progress, in cleaning up some residual pollution left over from when the railroad owned the property. The showroom has an energy efficient design, an efficient heating and cooling system, compact fluorescent bulbs, local products made by local/regional people, we buy local and represent local artisans, local employees, feature nature-based art work, domestic wood species and have a short supply chain.

Employees (8-10): All local employees, no long distance commuters, both owners have off the grid homes and have forest stewardship properties, some have or are converting vehicles to biodeisel / grease, straw bale home, involvement in local/regional conservation organizations, many ride bikes to work, most are outdoor enthusiasts, general high regard for and awareness of environmental issues, etc... One of our guidelines is that Misty Mountain is a “life-style” oriented business.

Products: Made locally using many local/regional materials and resources, many products made using reclaimed lumber, very durable, ultimately compostable and non-toxic, organic in form and natural in character. Much of our product is delivered or picked up locally and regionally. Our product is manufactured with the planet in mind. We strive to reduce waste and eliminate toxic emissions with low VOC coatings and adhesives. Our products result in a favorable impact regarding LEED ratings.

Misty Mountain Furniture - Green From the Beginning

Sandpoint, Idaho – Chris Park and John Edwards started their company, Misty Mountain Furniture, in 1991 with the goal of building a business that would support the quality of life they enjoyed in beautiful North Idaho and also be environmentally conscientious. “From the beginning” says Park, “we were committed to using local, renewable resources and labor.” Edwards goes on to say that, “the products we build and sell, the materials we use, our manufacturing facility and it’s design, even the way we live and our homes have been decisions we’ve made with the planet in mind.” Both Park and Edwards built energy efficient, off-the-grid homes near Sandpoint that are powered using wind, solar and micro-hydropower and both, along with many of their employees, commute via bicycle when weather permits.

Misty Mountain handcrafts its “Rustic Elegant” furniture and cabinets using regionally reclaimed lumber, domestic wood species, domestically milled birch plywood and small diameter lumber often consider “forest by-products.” Local mills are used whenever possible. Low VOC coatings and adhesives minimize toxic emissions. The company remodeled the “old, worn out” building that was purchased in 1999, giving new life to a Sandpoint landmark. Both the manufacturing facility and showroom are located under one roof on which solar panels may grace in the near future. Materials from the demo of the old building were used in the remodel. The facility utilizes passive solar design, energy efficient heating and lighting, locally produced straw board paneling, low water flush toilets and electric hand dryers. Everything that can be is recycled, even the sawdust and wood scraps. The company uses energy wind credits available through Avista and brightens their work and showroom spaces using compact fluorescent lighting. Park positively sums it up by saying that “every environmentally sound decision we’ve made has, in turn, been a sound business decision.”
